Caledonia
Legend says Captain Cook gave New Caledonia its name because its coasts reminded him those of Scotland – the roman «Caledonia».
For the Kanak, this is the first act of imperialism: a way of depriving them of their name, and of their own history. There is something else… Cook never justified his choice. Instead of knowing what he thought, we know where he went. We know his route along New Caledonia and the itinerary of his only trip to Scotland. We can retrace them. Test the legend. Deconstruct it. Ask ourselves what holds us together.
